Description
This simple burger recipe is made with only 5 ingredients and topped with French style caramelized onions, peppery arugula, and steamed provolone cheese. All on a brioche or whole wheat bun. YUM
Ingredients
For the burger patties
- 1lb 85% lean ground beef*
- 1/4 cup of diced yellow onion
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp black garlic (I had some on hand from Trader Joe's and it was YUM in these - but totally optional!)
- Pinch of red pepper flakes
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tbs worchestershire sauce
Caramelized Onions
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp coconut sugar or cane sugar
- 1 tbs of ghee or grass-fed butter
Burger Add-Ons
- Arugula
- Brioche Bun or Lettuce Wrapped
- Provolone Cheese
Instructions
- MIX IT - In a large bowl, combine beef, onion, spices, and worchestershire sauce.
- Form It- Form into 4 evenly sized patties and store in the fridge while you make the caramelized onions.
- SAUTE - Heat a high rimmed skillet over medium high heat. Add ghee. Once it starts simmering, add the onion. Stir frequently to prevent burning. After the onions have softened (about 3-5 minutes), add the sugar. The sugar helps the caramelization process move faster. Keep sauteeing until all onions are a dark brown color. (about an additional 7-10 minutes). Discard to a paper towel lined plate and set aside.
- Cook- In the same skillet, add the burger patties. Cook about 2 minutes per side. About 1 minute before the burgers finish cooking, add the cheese (if using).
- Steam the cheese - To get super yummy gooey cheese, put the lid on the skillet for 1 minute. And be prepared to be WOWED by the steamed provolone cheese 🤤
- ASSEMBLE - Build your perfect french onion style burger. To the bun add the burger, onions, and arugula. So simple yet so good!
Notes
*Toasting the brioche buns in the oven with a little butter to get them golden brown and a little crispy on the inside is a good idea.
* You can swap the ground beef for whatever ground meat you have. Just make sure it's cooked through all the way!
** For other substitutions, see full details in my post above.
